Media Module for Gender Equality
Media both reflects and constructs gender perceptions in society. This module aims to recognize the stereotypes that content unconsciously reinforces and to establish an alternative language.
Module Content
1. Language and Framing
How the passive voice in news headlines conceals the agent, what euphemisms like "domestic dispute" hide, who is sought as an expert.
2. Visual Selection
Whom the photograph centers, how bodies are depicted, the stereotypes carried by archival images.
3. Source Diversity
Who speaks in a news report, who is spoken about; simple ways to measure the gender distribution of speakers.
4. Ethics
Privacy in violence reporting, consent, preventing secondary victimization; interview techniques focused on trauma.
Application
Participants will analyze a news item of their choice using this framework, then rewrite the same news item. The outputs will be discussed within the group.
