Gender-Based Media Training (Edirne)

The Gender-Based Media Training was held on April 14-15, 2026, in Edirne, hosted by Stylus Bookstore & Cafe.

First Day

It began with introductions and discussions on gender equality. Basic concepts such as how gender norms lead to human rights violations, the glass ceiling, and intersectionality were addressed.

The media's portrayal of femicides, the passive language used by the media, and the fact that violence is systematically perpetrated by men were examined in depth. Reporting styles that legitimize violence with language patterns that conceal the perpetrator, such as "was murdered," "suffered," "by," and excuses like "insanity" and "jealousy," were criticized. Media representations were discussed through good conduct reductions, advertisements, TV series, and daytime programming.

While discussing the responsibilities of journalists and the problems they face; alternative news writing styles, women-centered journalism methods, and the importance of not portraying women solely as victims in the media were emphasized. Professional principles such as not providing detailed information about violence, not revealing the locations where children live, and the concept of impartiality were examined.

Second Day

The situation of local media in Edirne; the representation of LGBTİ+ individuals, migrant women, and Roma women in the media were discussed. Reporting methods that lead to the erasure of Roma lives and the visibility of groups experiencing intersectional discrimination were discussed.

Emphasis was placed on rights-based media, women's representation in politics, and the importance of being familiar with laws when sharing content. The training concluded with participants' expectations, psychological empowerment, and suggestions and evaluations for future work.
