Psychosocial Empowerment Techniques Training
Topics in gender-based studies often touch upon personal experiences. This module offers fundamental skills for those leading group work to protect both participants and themselves.
Creating a safe space
- Group rules determined together at the beginning
- Confidentiality: what is said in the room stays in the room
- Voluntary participation: the right to "pass"
- Arrangement of the physical space and timing
Active listening
Understanding before offering solutions; reflecting without judgment; allowing space for silence. While these may seem intuitive, they are skills that develop with practice.
Trauma-informed approach
Not forcing narratives, giving prior warnings about triggering topics, not reducing individuals to their stories. Sharing itself is not therapy; referring to professional support when necessary is essential.
Facilitator self-care
Secondary trauma is real. Debriefing after sessions, regular supervision, and sharing within the team make this work sustainable.
Note: This module does not replace psychological counseling training; it provides a basic framework for those leading group work.
