Supporting Gender Equality with Art and Culture

Gender equality is often explained with numbers: labor force participation rate, wage gap, representation percentage. These data are necessary but do not convince people on their own. Art fills the void left by data.

Three functions of art

Making visible

Domestic labor, the burden of care, insecurity in public spaces are often not discussed because they are considered "normal." A documentary or a photo series breaks habit and makes the unseen visible.

Building shared emotion

Statistics inform, stories connect. A woman's experience told in her own voice evokes curiosity rather than defensiveness in the listener. Change often begins with this curiosity.

Opening space

A workshop, exhibition, or screening creates a concrete occasion for people to come together and talk. Art here is not the goal, but the reason for gathering.

Points to consider

• No one's story is used without their consent.
• Victimhood is not sacrificed for aesthetics; the narrator is the owner of the narrative.
• Instead of "speaking for women," space is opened for women to speak.
