Advocacy Module Through Art and Culture

22 September 2026 updated · 1 min read · 747 views

This module explains practical ways to make artistic production part of a campaign.

1. Defining the problem

A campaign starts with a problem that can be worked on at scale. If you can't write the problem in one sentence, it hasn't been narrowed down enough yet.

2. Target audience and decision-maker

Who do you want to persuade? Who makes the decision? These two are often different people and require different language.

3. Building the narrative

A good advocacy narrative consists of three parts: what is happening (situation), why it matters (value), what should be done (demand). Art mostly works in the first two parts; the demand must be explicitly stated separately.

4. Choosing the format

  • Photo exhibition, location-dependent, suitable for local press
  • Short film, suitable for online dissemination
  • Mural, permanent, public, requires permission
  • Street theatre, direct contact, low cost
  • Podcast / audio archive, low budget, high intimacy

5. Measurement

How much has changed should be asked as much as how many people were reached. Determine concrete indicators such as signatures collected, press coverage, response from institutions.
